The province, through BC Housing, purchased the 82-room Travelodge Hotel at 45466 Yale Road in Chilliwack, as part of a long-term plan to provide safe, supportive housing for those at risk or experiencing homelessness in Chilliwack.

Since April 2020, BC Housing has been leasing hotel rooms as a temporary shelter and isolation centre. Ruth and Naomi’s Mission has been managing the leased rooms and will continue to manage the new supportive housing.

The Travelodge purchase was part of a long-term plan to address homelessness in the City of Chilliwack.

Short-term, this building is continuing to operate as an emergency response centre and isolation centre. The intention is for this building to be rezoned for use as supportive housing for those at risk or experiencing homelessness in Chilliwack and further along in their journey. If successful, individuals who have been staying at the former Travelodge will be able to remain and call this their home.

The Travelodge purchase is part of the solution for The Portal shelter, scheduled to close on July 15, 2021. The proposed permanent shelter and supportive housing at Rowat and Trethewey Avenue is scheduled to be completed in mid-2023. Since it was purchased, Ruth and Naomi’s OASIS Residential Addictions Treatment Services Program have moved into the building. The isolation centre will remain at the Travelodge; BC Housing will continue to work with Fraser Health to address the need for safe isolation in the community.

Staff would continue to be on-site 24 hours a day to make sure residents can succeed, maintain housing, and receive important supports such as:

  • Life skill training
  • Wellness checks
  • Referrals to health services, and
  • Skill development programs.

All residents would sign a program agreement with Ruth and Naomi’s and pay rent.

The City and BC Housing continues to work collaboratively to assess the housing needs of the community and work with local service providers to ensure these are being met.

Operator

Ruth and Naomi’s Mission will continue to remain as the operator. Ruth and Naomi’s has provided community services, addictions treatment and support services to the Chilliwack community for over 20 years.

Community Information Session

The Community Information Session has been cancelled due to low registration; however, BC Housing, Fraser Health and Ruth and Naomi’s Mission can still answer any questions you may have about the proposed supportive housing. The session presentation can be found in the Document side panel on this page.

BC Housing is committed to an ongoing community dialogue. We invite the community to learn more about the project and address questions that neighbours may have by using the Q&A below, emailing us at communityrelations@bchousing.org

  • Hi There, you indicate that a Community Information Session was scheduled for May; what was/were the date(s) they were to be held, where was notice to be found for such Sessions and where were they to occur? Also, I notice that you have indicated that the Public Hearing date is "to be confirmed", have the applications not been submitted and the date set?

Marko asked almost 2 years ago

Thank you for your inquiry, Marko.

BC Housing sent out a Neighbourhood letter and it was also advertised in the Chilliwack Progress. Session date was supposed to be May 4, 2022 but it was cancelled due to low registration. Presentation was put online for the community and community members were also encouraged to get in touch if they have questions or comments using our Let's Talk page Q&A tool or communityrelations@bchousing.org email.

The public hearing date was just scheduled by the City for June 21, 2022: https://www.chilliwack.com/main/notices/RZ1611%20-%2045466%20Yale%20Road.pdf
