In 2021, the province, through BC Housing, purchased the former Chilliwack Travelodge Hotel at 45466 Yale Road to provide 59 supportive homes for those at risk or experiencing homelessness in Chilliwack.
BC Housing is planning to develop a new modular building at the site. The plan is to open a 43-bed shelter for older adults in this building. This project is called the Interchange Shelter. It is possible thanks to the Province’s new HEARTH program.
Supportive Housing
Supportive homes are deeply affordable studio apartments. They are intended for people who are experiencing or at risk of homelessness and need support services to maintain their housing. Residents are single adults of all genders, including seniors and people with disabilities. Priority is given to people in the local community.
Staff are on-site 24 hours a day to make sure residents receive important supports such as:
- Life skill training
- Wellness checks
- Referrals to health services, and
- Skill development programs.
All residents sign a program agreement and pay rent.
New Interchange Shelter
The new shelter will provide:
- 43 private sleeping units for older adults living in shelters or experiencing homelessness
- Spaces for all genders
- 3 meals per day
- Laundry
- Individual case planning
- Referrals to health care and other services
Safety measures for shelter guests and the wider community will include:
- Minimum 3 staff onsite 24/7
- Security cameras & lighting
- Regular perimeter checks
- Regular property maintenance

Background
BC Housing had been leasing rooms at the former Travelodge Hotel as a temporary shelter and isolation centre since April 2020. The Travelodge purchase in 2021 was part of a long-term plan to address homelessness in the City of Chilliwack.
The building was successfully rezoned in June 2022 for use as supportive housing for those at risk or experiencing homelessness in Chilliwack and further along in their journey. Ruth & Naomi’s managed the leased rooms and continued to manage the new supportive housing. Since the purchase, Ruth & Naomi’s OASIS Residential Addictions Treatment Services Program has also moved into the building.
