BC Housing, the City of Kamloops and The Mustard Seed are working together to create a year-round shelter at 1055 Glenfair Drive in Kamloops. This shelter will have up to 40 spaces mainly for seniors and older adults experiencing or at risk of homelessness.
We currently expect construction to start in 2025. We will share more details about the project as they are available.
The latest counts show over 300 people experiencing homelessness in Kamloops. Shelters like this offer an important step in a person’s transition out of homelessness and into stable housing. People without access to basic shelter must focus solely on survival. After a person can access a warm bed, washrooms and meals, they are in a much better position to improve their housing situation and well-being.
About the operator
BC Housing selected The Mustard Seed through a fair and open process to operate this shelter and provide services to the guests. The Mustard Seed is a Christian non-profit organization that has been caring for individuals experiencing homelessness and poverty since 1984. The organization operates in multiple cities – Calgary, Edmonton, Red Deer, Medicine Hat, and Grande Prairie in Alberta, Kamloops in British Columbia, and a seventh location soon to open in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. All locations offer a different range of programs and services to serve our most vulnerable community members.
A caring community can contribute greatly to the success of people transitioning out of homelessness. We commit to keeping lines of communication open throughout this project. We will reach out directly to neighbours and nearby businesses to provide more information about the project and answer questions.
