Katherine’s Place

BC Housing and A Way Home Kamloops have partnered to create 39 supportive homes for youth at 560 Tranquille Road in Kamloops. The new building is called Katherine’s Place and was completed in January 2025. These new homes are an important part of our continued effort to address and prevent homelessness in the community.

Housing Operatorions

A Way Home Kamloops (AWHK) will operate Katherine’s Place and provide services to the residents. AWHK has been operating in the region since 2012 and is a leader in the province on youth homelessness prevention, supports and housing. Learn more about AWHK by visiting awayhomekamloops.com.

Services and supports at Katherine’s Place include:

  • on-site 24/7 staff support
  • meals
  • life skills training
  • employment and education support
  • peer support
  • safe and supportive space
  • connections to community health services

AWHK and BC Housing offer supportive homes to youth through a community-based assessment process that matches youth’s needs with the supports available. This process also ensures a balance mix of residents in the building. All residents will sign a program agreement (similar to a tenancy agreement) and pay a program fee (similar to rent).

The building is named after Katherine McParland, a former AWHK Executive Director who dedicated her life and career to advocating for youth in Kamloops. Katherine McParland passed away in 2020. Katherine’s Place will continue her legacy by providing services to young people aged 19-26 who are at risk of or experiencing homelessness.

Community Engagement

On November 22 and 23, 2021, A Way Home Kamloops and BC Housing hosted community information sessions to share more details about the housing project.

On January 28, 2025, we shared a letter with key contact information to neighbours and nearby businesses. This Who to Call | When to Call sheet is also available here for download.

  • Why is there no low income for couples who are on disability and range age of 50 too 59 years old there is no place like that I know of.

Samari asked over 3 years ago

Thank you for your inquiry. People who experience homelessness are as varied as any other neighbour. They may be seniors, persons with disabilities, people who have employment but no housing, people who are working through mental health concerns and/or substance use.

The Province is working hard to build the right mix and supply of homes that people need across B.C. These are complex and evolving societal challenges that will take time to address—there are no “quick fixes” nor a “one-size-fits-all” approach. Together in partnership with all levels of government, Indigenous Peoples, non-profits, and the private sector, we will continue to strive for a shared goal of a province where everyone has a safe, secure and affordable home.

This site is just one of many in Kamloops. Last year the Province had over 1,000 new homes complete or underway across Kamloops including:

    • 290 homes for low to moderate income earners
    • 155 homes for people experiencing homelessness
    • 44 homes for women and their children leaving violence
    • 533 student housing beds

BC Housing also has Supportive Housing sites in Mission Flats, Spero, Maverick, and Rosethorn.

The last Point in Time count for Kamloops (2018) identified 201 individuals experiencing homelessness. This site is important to bringing that number down.

BC Housing has a range of programs to provide housing assistance for residents of BC. This includes various subsidized housing options as well as rent supplements in which part of an individual's rent is paid for by BC Housing. You can view this site to search housing listings in a specific area: https://www.bchousing.org/housing-assistance/rental-housing/housing-listings

The Program Finder can be used to learn which programs you and your family might be eligible for: BC Housing Program Finder

If you, or somebody you know is experiencing homelessness or is at risk of homelessness, please contact Applicant Services at 1-800-257-7756 (toll-free) for assistance with a housing application and to discuss potential housing options.

  • When is the complex scheduled to be built and what is the timeline for completion and accupancy

Hedley asked over 3 years ago

Thank you for your inquiry. We are targeting summer 2023 as the construction completion date. Please keep in mind there might be unexpected delays, as with any other construction. We will do our best to keep everyone updated on construction dates and project details at the project's Let's Talk page.

  • Parking is going to be a problem. Where are all workers going to park?

Josey Lubyk asked over 3 years ago

The proposed development provides a total of 10 parking spaces whereas 13 are required by the zoning by-law. The project team is seeking a development variance permit to approve a reduction in required parking. Given the youth client group that is intended for this project, we anticipate few residents will have personal vehicles. The proposal instead includes 26 bicycle spaces. Furthermore, the subject site is located along the Tranquille corridor which has many amenities and services within walking distance, including public transit service.

  • Will this building allow the youth to use drugs, similar to other BC Housing projects in Kamloops that have been built to address homelessness. Thank you, Angela

Angela Rigby asked over 3 years ago

    Thank you for your inquiry.

This project will provide 39 self-contained supportive homes for youth and young adults aged 19-26 experiencing homelessness in Kamloops to get off the streets and on their way to a safe and happy life.

BC Housing’s supportive housing buildings are operated based on the widely recognized and proven Housing First model. Residents at these sites, and all other supportive housing buildings that BC Housing is affiliated with, are permitted to make their own choices in regard to lifestyle. This includes the decision to abstain or use drugs/alcohol in the privacy of their homes. If they choose to use, the operators will work with each tenant ensure they use safely.

We take a harm reduction approach, which means staff is available to support any residents who are in various phases of substance use, and the building will be set up with the ability to provide a safe consumption space for residents only, to ensure the safety of residents who are active substance users. When residents are ready to make a change, staff on site will connect them with the appropriate support services.
