Katherine’s Place

BC Housing and A Way Home Kamloops have partnered to create 39 supportive homes for youth at 560 Tranquille Road in Kamloops. The new building is called Katherine’s Place and was completed in January 2025. Residents will begin to move into Katherine’s Place in March 2025. These new homes are an important part of our continued effort to address and prevent homelessness in the community.

Operator

A Way Home Kamloops (AWHK) will operate Katherine’s Place and provide services to the residents. AWHK has been operating in the region since 2012 and is a leader in the province on youth homelessness prevention, supports and housing. Learn more about AWHK by visiting awayhomekamloops.com.

Services and supports at Katherine’s Place include:

  • on-site 24/7 staff support
  • meals
  • life skills training
  • employment and education support
  • peer support
  • safe and supportive space
  • connections to community health services

AWHK and BC Housing offer supportive homes to youth through a community-based assessment process that matches youth’s needs with the supports available. This process also ensures a balance mix of residents in the building. All residents will sign a program agreement (similar to a tenancy agreement) and pay a program fee (similar to rent).

The building is named after Katherine McParland, a former AWHK Executive Director who dedicated her life and career to advocating for youth in Kamloops. Katherine McParland passed away in 2020. Katherine’s Place will continue her legacy by providing services to young people aged 19-26 who are at risk of or experiencing homelessness.

Community Engagement

On November 22 and 23, 2021, AWHK and BC Housing hosted community information sessions to share more details about the housing project.

On January 28, 2025 , we shared a letter to neighbours and nearby business to provide an update about the opening of Katherine’s Place and provided direct contact information. Download the Who to Call | When to Call sheet.

We also hosted neighbours at an open house and guided community tour on February 4, 2025. This event provided a valuable opportunity for neighbours to see the thoughtfully designed spaces firsthand and learn about the positive impact this housing will have in the community.

Questions

BC Housing and AWHK commit to answering questions and address any concerns about this project quickly and collaboratively.

If you have questions about the housing operations and programming at Katherine’s Place, please contact A Way Home Kamloops by emailing admin@awayhomekamloops.com.
