Kamloops Complex Care Housing

Hand-drawn site plan showing a building footprint, parking spaces, landscaped areas, and trees surrounding the property.

Overview

BC Housing is working with Interior Health Authority to build 20 units of Complex Care Housing (CCH) at a location within the Columbia Precinct. This project is an important part of our continued effort to address and prevent homelessness and improve access to health services, including mental health and substance use services, in Kamloops. The new homes will give people facing or at risk of homelessness, and who have complex health challenges, a better chance at leading healthy, stable lives.

The Kamloops Complex Care Housing project will be located on a subdivided portion of 1100 Glenfair Drive. While the project is not part of the broader Glenfair redevelopment, which continues to move forward on a separate timeline, it will require earlier demolition of an existing and aging building. This site was selected because of its proximity to the hospital, transit, and other health services in the area.

About the Building

The three-storey building will have 20 studio homes with kitchenettes and private bathrooms. There would also be:

  • A central kitchen
  • Communal dining
  • Amenity spaces
  • Clinical spaces for residents to receive on-site health care services

The building will be designed to provide a welcoming, home-like atmosphere that fits into the local neighbourhood.

About Complex Care Housing

Complex Care Housing is for people who require additional supports to manage their health needs, including those with mental health /or addictions challenges, brain injury, disabilities, or chronic illness. The program provides deeply affordable homes with voluntary person-centered health, cultural and social supports. These supports are available to residents under one roof and in their own home, for as long as they need. Residents would be adults (19+) of all genders, including seniors and people with disabilities.

Complex Care Housing has been a welcome addition to supportive housing programs across B.C. Learn more by visiting gov.bc.ca/complexcarehousing.org.

Services & Supports

BC Housing will select an experienced non-profit housing operator through a fair and open process to manage the building and provide services in partnership with Interior Health. The non-profit operator will provide support services to residents, including:

  • Daily meals
  • Life skills training
  • Social, cultural and recreational programs

Health services would be delivered in partnership with Interior Health and would include:

  • Primary care
  • Nursing
  • Specialized mental health and substance use care

Staff will be on-site 24/7 to support residents and provide a point of contact for neighbours.
