1425 Cranberry Avenue is a vacant lot owned by the City of Nanaimo. The proposal is to build approximately 46 new rental homes for people with low to moderate incomes. No supportive housing will be built on this site. This housing will help families, seniors on fixed incomes, students and people with disabilities.
Nanaimo has a shortage of affordable housing. In 2018, the City of Nanaimo researched housing needs and options for action. The Nanaimo Affordable Housing Strategy set out the priorities for the City to address housing affordability over the next ten years, including the need to develop 600 new affordable rental units. This development will help move us toward that goal.
Once an operator is identified, BC Housing will invite the community to information sessions to learn more and provide input towards the application to rezone the property. In the meantime, you can send us your questions and feedback below, or email communityrelations@bchousing.org.

BC Housing and the City of Nanaimo are in the early stages of planning and development of new affordable rental housing at 1425 Cranberry Avenue.
The Cranberry Connector access route, as shown on the map in the neighbour information package, is currently constructed to approximately the end of the proposed development portion of the site.
The development of the Cranberry Connector is a separate infrastructure matter for the City of Nanaimo and is not related to the development of affordable rental housing at 1425 Cranberry Ave.
