Penticton, Snpaʔx̌təntn - 3240 Skaha Lake Road

rendering of a modern housing development featuring multi-story building with large windows and balconie

Overview

BC Housing has partnered with ASK Wellness Society and the Ooknakane Friendship Centre to provide 54 recovery-focused homes with an Indigenous cultural lens at 3240 Skaha Lake Road in Penticton. This project is now complete and residents moved in, in June 2023.

Snpaʔx̌təntn means “a healing place” in Nsyilxcən, the language spoken by Syilx peoples, and is pronounced [Sin-pow_h-tan-tn], but please defer to a language speaker for certainty.

Snpaʔx̌təntn - Healing House is an innovative first-of-its-kind supportive housing program that provides indigenous-focussed, culturally safe supports for people who are experiencing, or at risk of experiencing, homelessness. Healing House is for people who are further along in their recovery journey, who want to live in an environment free from alcohol and substance use.

Project Details

ASK Wellness Society operates the building in partnership with the Ooknakane Friendship Centre. There are 52 studio apartments that are suitable for one person and 2 one-bedroom units that can house couples who are on their recovery journey together. Each apartment has its own bathroom and kitchenette and comes with basic furnishings.

Unique to Snpaʔx̌təntn, staff positions will include Housing Support Workers, Peer Recovery Support Coaches, Employment Rehabilitation Workers, a Drug & Alcohol Counsellor, and a Cultural Support Worker. Staff will support people in connecting to education, employment, and volunteering opportunities, specific to their self-identified goals.

Some features of the project include:

  • 24/7 on-site culturally safe supports
  • accessible units for who use mobility aides
  • laundry facilities
  • a commercial kitchen, providing two meals per day, with an indigenous focus
  • four-storey modular construction
  • space to deliver holistic, culturally-driven programs and supportive services
