Smithers – 3879 Alfred Avenue

Rendering of a modern three‑storey building with tan and brown siding under a bright blue sky.

Building rendering only. Subject to change.

Project Overview

BC Housing is building 60 new homes at 3879 Alfred Avenue.

The 3-storey residential apartment building will include:

  • 40 studio homes with support services (supportive housing)
  • 20 permanent shelter spaces with support services
  • Separate indoor program spaces and outdoor common areas
  • Separate dining areas and laundry facilities
  • Separate reception entrance areas and office space for staff
  • Fenced grounds and on-site parking

Supportive Housing

Supportive housing is subsidized housing with on-site supports. Residents are single adults (19+) who are at risk of or experiencing homelessness. This can include seniors and people with disabilities.

All residents apply to live in supportive housing, sign program agreements and pay rent.

Typical supports include:

  • 24/7 staffing
  • Daily meals
  • Life skills and employment training
  • Access to health supports
  • Connections to community services

To learn more, check out our Stories from Supportive Housing playlist on YouTube. These short videos show inside several supportive housing buildings. They also share stories from residents, staff and neighbours.

Permanent Shelter

Shelters offer free, immediate places to stay for adults (19+) who are experiencing or at risk of homelessness. A guest may stay in a shelter space for one night to a few months or longer. Shelter staff work with each guest to help them move toward stable, permanent housing.

Typical supports include:

  • Bed and bedding
  • Shared washrooms and laundry facilities
  • Daily meals
  • 24/7 staff support
  • Personalized case planning
  • Referrals to health care, housing and other community services

Supports and services are for registered shelter guests only.

Operator

BC Housing will select an experienced non-profit housing operator to manage the building and provide services to the residents.

Community Engagement

We commit to being good neighbours. We will share any updates about this project as soon as they are available.

We will share a direct phone number for the building when it opens and address any concerns quickly and collaboratively.

  • February 1, 2024 – Virtual Community Dialogue Session
  • February 5, 2024 – Community Dialogue Session at the Royal Canadian Legion
  • May 6 and 20, 2025 – Smithers Situation Table meetings about building changes
