In April 2023, BC Housing announced the purchase of the former Chalmers Lodge at 1450 West 12th Avenue in Vancouver. We plan to use this building to provide much-needed supportive housing in the area. This project also plays a major role in our efforts to address the housing crisis in Vancouver. We are currently renovating the building, and we expect it to open to residents in spring 2024.

About the homes

Chalmers Lodge is a former assisted living residence for seniors. The 12-storey building has many features that make it ideal for supportive housing. These include:

  • 114 studio suites with private bathrooms
  • several lounge areas
  • a central dining room
  • a commercial kitchen
  • office space for staff

The central location also means residents can access transit, health care, shopping and other amenities. The building was already vacant at the time of purchase.

In this building, we will give preference to seniors who are already BC Housing tenants but wish to move into a more seniors-focused building. Among these, we will also prioritize Indigenous people, women and other equity-denied groups.

BC Housing will choose residents for this building using a process that matches people with the types of homes and services they need. Supports for residents may include daily meals, life and employment skills training, and connections to health care and other community services.

The operator

BC Housing selected Connective through a fair and open process to manage this building and provide services to the residents. Connective has a long history of providing innovative, person-centered services across BC and the Yukon. They offer a range of housing, life-skills, outreach and employment, and community-based services with the goal of assisting individuals to achieve greater independence.

Community engagement

This site does not require rezoning by the City of Vancouver. There will be no public process relating to the land use. Still, BC Housing and Connective will strive to create safe and inclusive environment for supportive housing residents as well as the surrounding community.

We commit to keeping lines of communication open with neighbours throughout this project, answering questions, and addressing any concerns.
