Creating healthy, safe, stable homes for people in Vernon
BC Housing is working with Turning Points Collaborative Society (TPCS) on a proposal to bring new homes with supports for people experiencing homelessness in Vernon. The proposal includes two sites and over 100 new urgently needed supportive homes.
The 2019 Point in Time Homeless Count counted 151 people without homes in Vernon. COVID-19 highlighted the critical need to bring people inside. These new homes would help vulnerable people and provide a safe place for those who don’t have a home.
The proposals are for 52 new homes with supports to be added to My Place at 2600 35 Street and to tear down the old empty Howard House building at 2307 43 Street to redevelop and build up to 50 new homes with supports. Our Place shelter is located on the 43 Street property and would continue to provide temporary shelter for up to 46 people.
This housing is needed to ensure some of Vernon’s most vulnerable people can access a basic and fundamental human right: housing. The homes will provide safe, secure housing with wrap-around supports for approximately 100 community residents who are currently experiencing or at risk of homelessness in Vernon. This housing is an opportunity for people to leave the streets, parks and shelter system for safe and stable housing and move towards improved quality of life.
Housing with Supports
Supportive housing is a self-contained home with support services to help residents lead healthier and safer lives. Supports include medical health services, mental health and addictions services, food, laundry and security. All residents will pay rent.
Turning Points Collaborative Society
Turning Points Collaborative Society is an experienced local non-profit society providing housing and support services to people experiencing homelessness in the region. They would operate both buildings and provide residents with supports such as meal programs, life and employment skills training, and health and wellness support services. Staff would be onsite 24/7, working with each resident to understand their needs and goals and providing the support they need to have housing stability.

The proposal for 2307 43rd Street is to demolish the old Howard House shelter, which has long been slated for redevelopment, and build approximately 50 units of new supportive housing adjacent to the Our Place shelter.
