Abbotsford – 2509 Pauline Street

On June 2, 2021, BC Housing announced the purchase of the former Red Lion Inn and Suites at 2509 Pauline Street in Abbotsford.

This hotel first served as a 29-bed shelter during the COVID-19 pandemic. In 2022, BC Housing and Lookout Housing and Health Society converted 28 hotel rooms into supportive housing. This site also hosts the 20-bed Lighthouse Shelter.

In the coming year, BC Housing will open 22 more shelter spaces in the former liquor store area of the building. This new shelter will be called the Pauline Shelter.

Supportive Homes

Supportive homes are deeply affordable studio apartments. They are intended for people who are experiencing or at risk of homelessness and need support services to maintain their housing. Residents are single adults of all genders, including seniors and people with disabilities.

Support services for residents include daily meals, life and employment skills training, supervised consumption and referrals to health care and other community services. At this site, 10 of the homes are funded for Complex Care Housing – a program that allows Fraser Health to offer enhanced onsite health care supports.

Lighthouse Shelter

The Lighthouse Shelter offers 20 warm, safe and semi-private spaces for people experiencing homelessness. Meals are provided, as well as washrooms, showers and laundry facilities. Guests have access to a private outdoor space.

This shelter is referral-only and open 24/7 to current guests only. There are minimum 2 staff onsite at all times. Shelter guests are not allowed visitors. BC Housing chose this model for this neighbourhood as it prevents walk-ups, line-ups and loitering.

Pauline Shelter

In 2024, BC Housing plans to open 22 more shelter spaces at on this property. This new shelter will be called the Pauline Shelter. It will be located in the former liquor store area of the building. It will operate separately from the Lighthouse Shelter in the main hotel building.

The Pauline Shelter will use the same referral-only model as the Lighthouse Shelter.

Operator

Lookout Housing and Health Society has over 50 years of experience providing shelter and support services to those at risk or experiencing homelessness, and individuals coping with a wide variety of challenges including poverty, mental illness, and substance use.
