Overview

BC Housing is planning for the redevelopment of the Glenfair Seniors Housing at 1100 Glenfair Drive in Kamloops. The current buildings are aging and need extensive and costly repairs. The redevelopment will rebuild the existing 80 affordable seniors homes. The result will be approximately 340 new rental homes across four buildings, each building with up to six storeys.

Glenfair is a unique, 13.5 acre property located west of Peterson Creek. BC Housing owns nine residential buildings, built in 1958 and 1982. For over 60 years, Glenfair has provided homes for many seniors and people living with diverse abilities on fixed incomes. This redevelopment project provides the opportunity to rebuild and modernize the aging homes and to offer additional affordable housing to help address housing challenges within the Kamloops community.

BC Housing will continue to own the Glenfair property following redevelopment.

Community Engagement

A revised Development Concept follows from BC Housing’s work over two years to study the Glenfair property. Input was received from 2021 to 2023 from Glenfair tenants and the Kamloops community on the project Vision Framework and the Preliminary Redevelopment Options - Open House Presentation Boards. In 2023, the project team received feedback on a draft Development Concept – Open House Presentation Boards.

Feedback has supported the urgent need for additional affordable rental housing and indicated Glenfair was well situated within a valley and close to downtown to accommodate additional density and height. Feedback encouraged a design that would promote a sense of community among residents and highlighted the importance of:

  • Connections to greenspace and natural areas
  • Promotion of sustainable building practices
  • Accessible design and design flexibility to allow seniors to age in place
  • Safe and convenient routes for pedestrians, cycling and mobility scooters
  • A focus on tenants who are seniors and those with accessibility needs
  • Designing the development to prevent crime
  • Priority amenities for tenants included greenspace, gardens and outdoor seating areas, a common room, personal storage options and a transit stop

Indigenous Engagement

BC Housing is committed to meaningful Indigenous partnerships and relationships based on principles of Reconciliation and gratefully acknowledges the project is located on the Tk̓emlúps te Secwépemc territory, situated within the unceded traditional lands of the Secwépemc Nation. BC Housing appreciates the partnership that we have with Tk̓emlúps te Secwépemc and respects the territory and land on which the project is located.

Supporting Glenfair Tenants

Safe and secure housing for the current Glenfair tenants will continue to be a priority for BC Housing. The project team will be exploring the possibility of phasing the redevelopment to allow the Glenfair residents to stay on-site as long as possible. We will work with each tenant to make sure they have access to secure housing and their needs are met throughout planning and redevelopment. A tenant support worker will be available to provide support before and during the moving process if required.

We are committed to providing regular progress updates. If you have further Questions or comments, please email communityrelations@bchousing.org
