Abbotsford – 1610 Riverside Road

Rendering of the proposed façade for the new three storey supportive housing building in Abbotsford

Project overview

BC Housing and the City of Abbotsford are building 63 new homes at 1610 Riverside Road (next to the Cole Starnes Residence at 1670 Riverside Road).

The 5-storey residential apartment building will include:

  • 63 studio homes with support services (supportive housing)
  • Indoor and outdoor common areas
  • Indigenous-focused programming spaces, with artwork and landscaping developed in collaboration with the Matsqui and Sumas First Nations
  • Central kitchen and laundry facilities
  • Reception area and office space for staff
  • Fenced grounds with on‑site vehicle and bicycle parking

This location held a temporary 40-bed shelter (Riverside Shelter) from 2016 to 2024. When it closed, we helped all shelter guests find other safe accommodations in the community.

Supportive housing

Supportive housing is subsidized housing with on-site supports. Residents are single adults (19+) who are at risk of or experiencing homelessness. This can include seniors and people with disabilities.

All residents apply to live in supportive housing, sign program agreements and pay rent.

Typical supports include:

  • 24/7 staffing
  • Daily meals
  • Life skills and employment training
  • Access to health supports
  • Connections to community services

To learn more, check out our Stories from Supportive Housing playlist on YouTube. These short videos show inside several supportive housing buildings. They also share stories from residents, staff and neighbours.

Operator

BC Housing selected Lookout Housing and Health Society to operate this building. Staff will manage the building and provide services to the guests.

Lookout has operated Cole Starnes Residence supportive housing since it opened in 2019.

Community engagement

We commit to being good neighbours. We will share any updates about this project as soon as they are available.

We will share a direct phone number for the building when it opens and address any concerns quickly and collaboratively.

  • January 2025– Construction start notification
    • Letter mailed to area neighbours
  • October 2023– Engagement event with Cole Starnes residents and Riverside shelter guests
  • February 2022Project announcement
