The Province, through BC Housing, has purchased the 77-room Hostelling International property at 1025 Granville Street as part of a long-term plan to provide safe homes with supports as BC Housing and the City of Vancouver take collective action to address the critical needs of people experiencing homelessness in Vancouver. The Government of Canada is providing funding for this project through the Rapid Housing Initiative (RHI), an initiative of the National Housing Strategy.

BC Housing is currently leasing the property at 1025 Granville Street with the Community Builders Benevolence Group operating the supportive housing. The Community Builders Group will continue to operate the building, which includes providing supports such as meals, connection to health services, harm reduction and client-focused programs. A tenant support worker will work closely with tenants to assist them with life skills. The site will continue to have 24/7 staffing to provide security to residents of the building and the surrounding neighbourhood.

BC Housing is engaging with the community through the online Let’s Talk tool below and invite the community to learn more about the project and address questions that neighbours may have about supportive housing being operated at the site. Questions and comments can also be sent to: communityrelations@bchousing.org

  • Our son is a resident of 1025 Granville, for a couple years now. He was on the streets for over 4 years until this building opened up to meet the needs of the homeless of Vancouver. We are so grateful knowing that he has a safe place, a small space to call his own, and that he doesn't have to stand in long lines to get a meal every day. We appreciate the staff and the role they play in support of residents. Thank you so much to all that have made this possible!

Thank you for your supportive and kind words! It's always very heartwarming to hear success stories.

We wish you and your son all the best!

  • Is the address at 1025 Granville St considered transitional housing or supportive housing? Are tenants at this location covered by the Residential Tenancy Act?

darkjeebus asked over 2 years ago

Thank you for your inquiry. 1025 Granville is supportive housing, operated by Community Builders. The residents are under a program agreement and not an RTA tenancy agreement.
