The Province, through BC Housing, purchased the 110-room Luugat (formerly Howard Johnson Hotel) at 1176 Granville Street in 2020, as part of a long-term plan to build a mix of affordable homes for people in Vancouver.
The building is currently being operated as temporary supportive housing by Community Builders Group (CBG), who took over operations from Atira Women’s Resource Society in September 2025.
As part of the Province and the City of Vancouver’s work to replace single-room occupancy (SRO) buildings with purpose-built supportive housing, the Luugat will close by the end of June 2026. BC Housing is working with CBG to ensure all residents at the Luugat are successfully relocated to appropriate homes and supported throughout the process.
